The controversial organisation Amnesty International UK published a report on 8 July listing the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales among 117 organizations it described as part of an “anti-rights movement” in the United Kingdom. The report, A Growing Threat: the Anti-Rights Movement in the UK, said the listed organizations formed an ecosystem seeking to undermine the rights of women and homosexuals. It also named the Catholic Medical Association, Premier Christian News, J.K. Rowling’s women-only support service Beira’s Place, and a number of Christian, pro-life, and gender-critical organizations. The report defined “anti-rights actors” as groups, individuals, and public or private bodies seeking to weaken human rights protections in law and practice. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X is formally challenging the Vatican decree issued on 2 July by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith that excommunicated its six bishops. On 11 July, it filed the required preliminary appeal under canon law. According to the Society, this filing temporarily suspends the enforcement of the decree while the appeal process is underway. Communiqué of 13 July The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X announces that, in response to the decree issued on 2 July 2026 by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, it submitted on 11 July a preliminary recourse to the same Dicastery, in accordance with canons 1734 and following of the Code of Canon Law. Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington now says he removed Msgr. Stephen Rossetti as a Washington exorcist not because of his demons-and-UFOs comments, but because exorcism should be a private ministry. In a June 29 interview released July 8, McElroy said his objection was that exorcists should stick to quietly helping people in serious cases, not operate publicly: "It wasn't touching on the question of UFOs... my major objection is that I think the traditional role of an exorcist is a very private one." That explanation contradicts the archdiocese's own June statement announcing the removal. It said Rossetti's UFO comments "gravely undermine the Church's very precise teaching on the devil, demons and exorcism." Today, Leo XIV appointed Monsignor Christian Würtz, 55, as Bishop of Eichstätt, Germany. Leo XIV again chose a canon lawyer. A native of Karlsruhe, he originally studied law at Heidelberg University before entering the seminary. He holds two doctorates - one in both civil and canon law (doctor iuris utriusque) and another in theology. He also served as rector of Freiburg's seminary. At 48, he was the youngest bishop in Germany when he was ordained auxiliary bishop of Freiburg in 2019. At 55, he now becomes the youngest diocesan bishop in Germany. The Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on July 2 issued a decree excommunicating the six bishops of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX).
