Tonight, on the return flight from Metz to Rome, Pope Leo XIV was asked whether his remarks on euthanasia had crossed the boundary between religion and politics. Leo XIV replied: “I have not crossed that boundary.” When the Church speaks “in defense of life,” it is “not doing politics, but applying the Gospel to people’s lives.” And: “If this is doing politics, I did it; but I certainly did not intend to meddle in French politics. I simply wanted to teach what the Church really believes.”
